2018 Free Carriage Rides

In Historic Downtown Grand Junction

Join JR’s Carriage Service for FREE horse-drawn carriage rides in our beautiful historic Downtown Grand Junction. Carriage rides are being offered in an effort to promote and encourage downtown small business holiday shopping.

The carriage rides will take place every Saturday and Sunday from 12pm to 2pm. The pick-up location is located between 4th Street & 5th Street, on Main Street, in front of Cafe Sol. A carriage ride isn’t complete unless you get to

meet and love on our gentle giants (a perfect photo opportunity). Follow the Hashtag #JRsDowntownGJ  for the latest updates.

While on the carriage you will tour the downtown area for around 10 minutes. Along the way you will learn about the historical landmarks, the various shops and dinning opportunities, the draft horse breed, and the art of driving teams of horses. Santa is never too far away – so make sure your kiddos bring their Christmas Wish List!

After your carriage ride experience, we recommend enjoying lunch at one of many delicious dinning options. The free carriage rides would not be possible without our partnership with the Small Businesses in Downtown Grand Junction. Athletic Math Scholar Becomes New Addition

Excited to WELCOME Kaysyn Chintala as the newest member of the JR’s Carriage Service Team.

Born in Meeker, Colorado and raised on a ranch south of town, Kaysyn grew up on the back of a horse. Ranch work, roping, showing and rodeoing are second nature and her favorite pastimes. Recently she discovered a new area of the equine industry where she guided in the Flat Tops Wilderness Area packing campers by horseback. Joining our team, Kaysyn is delighted to share the Old West heritage with those who are open to equine adventures.

Along with Kaysyn’s passion for horses, she fell in love with athletics where she pursued volleyball and basketball scholarships in the flatlands of Kansas. After finishing her college athletic careers and receiving her degree in Business Technology, she is now seeking her Bachelor’s in Mathematics at Colorado Mesa University. Kaysyn is thrilled to crossover her competitive edge from basketball to breakaway and team roping at local rodeos.

Welcome To The Team!

We are excited to introduce you to the newest member of our team, Taylor van Zyl! Taylor was raised in Aspen, Colorado and brings with her years of equine experience. She recently graduated from Colorado State University with a bachelor’s degree in Equine Science and a minor in Agricultural Business. Taylor joined the JR’s Team, as our Lead Teamster, in early August. Her driving experience, spirited personality and connection/relationship with our horses made her a perfect fit for our long-term vision plan.

Taylor unhitching the team after a long day in the peach orchards.

In addition to driving teams for JR’s Carriage Service, Taylor will be running her own business, VZ Performance Horses. She is quickly establishing herself in Fruita, Colorado by starting colts, training both English and Western horses and giving riding lessons to all age groups. HopeWest Kids

The Next Generation Board recently hosted an exclusive fundraising event called “Spoons Under the Moon”. The idea behind the event was to showcase “Spoons After Dark” while raising additional funds for the HopeWest Kids program. Photo by Jami Davis Photography

HopeWest Kids is the only program of its kind in Western Colorado that provides grief and bereavement services to children, teens and their families who are coping with the serious illness or death of a loved one. Specially trained counselors offer grief education and counseling in Delta, Mesa, Montrose and Ouray counties. HopeWest Kids program also has an Equine Program called “Healing with Horses”. The program is led by EAGALA certified staff that pair kids with horses to process the thoughts and feelings associated with grief.  The groups are seasonal (Fall, Spring and Summer) and meet once a week for seven consecutive weeks.  The final two weeks involves a parent or guardian.

JR’s Carriage Service is actively involved in the local and statewide community. Owner, Joseph R. Burtard was recently appointed to the Next Generation Board for HopeWest (Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado). The Next Generation Board was given the task to raise money for the organization’s HopeWest Kids program.

“Spoons” is a quaint little bistro and bakery that can be found on the grounds of HopeWest. In the evening the bistro transforms into a popular and fashionable restaurant, “Spoons After Dark”. Spoons is not your ordinary restaurant or bistro. All of the tips go directly to the HopeWest Kids program. Last year, this vital program provided more than 700 kids across the Western Slope with much needed comfort and support.

The Next Generation Board recently hosted an exclusive fundraising event called “Spoons Under the Moon”. The idea behind the event was to showcase “Spoons After Dark” while raising additional funds for the HopeWest Kids program. The private event was a HUGE success which raised over $22,000!! Guest enjoyed the outdoor setting, yard games, live music from Liz Longly of Nashville, Tennessee, local wine and beer and of course the mouth watering food from Spoons.

Barrel Into Spring!

Barrel into Spring 2014Mark Your Calendar! You can quickly fill your calendar with unique social and memorable events that take place throughout the Grand Valley. Spring fever is filling the air as winter temperatures slowly fade away. This often means that you have to pick and choose between overlapping events.  The abundance of events and excuses to get outdoors is one of the many reasons I love living in this community! For the past two years, I have discovered and participated in the Grand Valley’s annual barrel tasting event. A hidden gem amongst the many events that take place in Western Colorado’s Wine Country.

Barrel into Spring 2014Over past 12 years, the Grand Valley Winery Association (GVWA) has offered this two-day barrel tasting event to a limited number of ticket holders. Tickets for this event, with no surprise, are sold out soon after they are released. The experience takes place twice a year (one weekend in April and another weekend in May). Event times for both weekends are Saturday 10am-4pm; Sunday 10am-3pm.

Barrel into Spring 2014Yes! It’s as good as it sounds! Your ticket (valued at $70/person) for the weekend gets you two solid days of exclusive wine and gourmet food parings, behind the scenes guided tours, a souvenir wine glass, and sampling directly from the barrels.

Canyon Wind Cellars, Carlson Vineyards, DeBeque Canyon Winery, Garfield Estates Vineyard & Winery, Grand River Vineyards, Graystone Winery, Plum Creek Cellars and Two Rivers Winery & Chateau are amongst the participating wineries. The majority of these wineries also happen to be stops on JR’s Carriage Service’s Horse-Drawn Wine Tours.

Peach Street

GVWA wineries (those listed above) offer event participants an additional 15% discount on their wines. With little self-control and a love for wine; we purchased three cases of wine after only our third stop. We finished each day with a signature drink at the Peach Street Distillers. Our experience at the distillery is worthy of it’s own blog. I encourage you to visit the Grand Valley Winery Association’s website for additional information on this event. Contact JR’s Carriage Service for all the tips and tricks on this event and other Grand Valley festivities.
